ࡱ> CEB%` bjbj 0*̟̟ e $] h " pI " 5 0e W& pW W 8 e Dear RNSA members and members of the Navy Shooting community at large, We want to bring you an update on the RNSA trophy project that Walt has spearheaded and on which we are now moving forward. If you disagree with what we are trying to do please let us know. Your opinions are important to us and your suggestions can help us in this endeavor. We will assume that you approve unless we hear from you to the contrary and will seek your support. We want to answer any questions that you have, especially since this involves at least a temporary expenditure of RNSA funds. Walt has acquired a fine trophy which we would like to process and donate to the National Rifle Association from the men and women of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve shooting teams, both past and present, in order to honor one of our past mentors, VADM Lloyd M. Mustin. This new trophy will be called the VADM Lloyd M. Mustin Trophy in honor of Admiral Mustin, United States Navy. For those of you who do not know or remember Admiral Mustin he was a great supporter of the U.S. Navy Shooting program and was instrumental in its inception and growth. Admiral Mustin probably developed his love for Navy shooting when he served with RADM Lee during WWII. He was on his staff when Lee was a battleship task force commander. Of course ADM Lee was noted for the eight medals he won in the early 1900s at the Olympic Games. He is also the ADM Lee who as an Ensign won the National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Individual Matches on the same day at Camp Perry, Ohio. Admiral Mustin as a Lieutenant Commander was on a number of Navy teams and competed at Camp Perry. During that period he won a leg toward pistol distinguished. After being promoted to Admiral he served as the Navy representative on the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, was a member of the NRA High Power Committee and after retirement served on the NRA Board of Directors and as NRA President. Many of you old timers remember his many visits to Camp Perry where he always spent time mingling with the Navy teams. It is fitting that we honor this man for his unrelenting support for the Navy Shooting Program. The trophy (photo attached) was previously an award for archery during the 1800s in England. It is sterling silver, 13-1/2" high with a base of 5-1/4" diameter We will have a wooden base made from black walnut wood (dark red in color) approximately 6-1/2" diameter x 2-3/4" high to mount it on with a silver ring to describe who the trophy is named for and a place to engrave the names of the winners. It would be awarded at Camp Perry during the Long Range Championships and would be for the winner of the currently unnamed metallic sight, 1000 yard match alongside the Leech Cup and Wimbledon Cup. We want to make this as prestigious a match as the Leech Cup and the Wimbledon Cup. To do this we are going to propose to NRA that they do things a little differently The match will be set up so that all competitors compete for the Mustin Trophy. A shoot off will be formed by selecting the high shooter in each rifle category (Any, Palma, Service) from each relay. If there are 4 relays, there will be 12 competitors in the shoot off and any of the rifle classes can win the trophy. The high scorer will be the winner of the Mustin Trophy and will be awarded a Gold Mustin medallion and a picture plaque of the trophy. The high scores of the remaining two categories of rifle will each receive a Bronze Mustin medallion. (Examples of the proposed medallions are attached) The process for trophy approval is through the NRA High Power Committee, to the Competition Rules Committee and then to the NRA Board of Directors. Walt is familiar with this process and expects this proposal to be accepted. When it comes up before the NRA board we hope to have the RNSA President as well as the O-in-Cs of the Navy and Naval Reserve team in the audience for recognition as sponsors of this trophy. We want the shooting community to know we actively support the shooting sports. The NRA requirements for a new trophy are that the sponsor provide for ten years of plaques and a traveling case to protect the trophy from damage. Here then is our plan for the trophy. We would use the funds currently in the trophy fund and provide the remainder from the current RNSA treasury. Our aim is to replace those funds in the treasury through fund raising. We anticipate that both retired and active duty personnel will participate in this fund raising effort. Here is a breakdown of the estimated costs: Trophy $1750 Medallions (18 gold, 32 Bronze) 3/year $ 900 Shipping Case $ 360 Silver ring for base of trophy $ 450 Picture Plaques for 10 years $50 per $ 500 Engraving of silver ring $ 90 Total $4050 As we progress on the project, estimates will be revised as necessary. There is allowance for two medallions for Mustin family members: VADM Henry Mustin, USN and LCDR J. Mustin, USN A fund raising drive will start on your receipt of this letter and run through the year in Retired, Active, and Reserve shooting communities. We hope that all shooters will participate no matter how small or large the contribution. Participation is the key to our success. In addition there is a possibility we can get a little help from the Naval Historical Center, since a while back they indicated an interest in helping us produce a new shooting trophy. If this is approved by the NRA (in the January 2009 timeframe), the trophy fund held by the RNSA treasurer along with some RNSA funds plus donations received will be expended to cover the costs of the project. The trophy fund contains donations from both active and retired shooters and is currently has a balance of $900. If every member donated about $20, this worthwhile and lasting project could be covered. Some will give, some wont, some will be able to give generously. Donations in any amount should be sent to: Dick Chadwick, RNSA Treasurer 47530 Lucas Cove Lane Lexington Park, MD 20653 /s/Don Lassell President, RNSA EHJjy .
